Baby Shower Number Two for Baby "Nims" Number Two

I love my coworkers.

For real. They are the greatest group of strong, intelligent, sassy, loving, compassionate, real, hard-working women that I know. The world of nursing is a funny one... everyone seems to know a nurse, has a cousin or a neighbor who's a nurse, or at the least has interacted with a nurse at some point in their life. Working as a nurse is complex, tiring, difficult, sometimes heart-breaking, and often extremely gratifying. I consider my nurse coworkers to be like a second family. The nature of our occupation makes it impossible not to become close friends. We work in close proximity for 12 hours at a time and rely on each other in stressful, busy situations. When one of us stumbles, we all join together in big ways to help out.

In short, I love my coworkers.

They never cease to amaze me. And most recently, surprised me all over again with an incredible shower for baby #2. I have insisted for the last several months that we didn't need anything for baby #2, that we had all of our "gear" still from Isaac. Despite this, these ladies rallied around me and literally showered me with incredible things. I am so very very humbled and thankful.

Funniest cake ever. Notice the spelling error! This made me laugh until I thought my water was going to break! The sweet coworker who ordered it insists that she corrected the spelling multiple times and in the end, it still came out wrong! So stinking funny. And it has stuck! Word of the blunder has spread throughout women's services and this baby is now lovingly referred to as Nims by anyone and everyone I know at work. I honestly love this and couldn't be more tickled to have such a great little nickname and story to tell this baby when he/she is older.

The goods! This isn't even all of it... didn't I tell you I was totally humbled by the outpouring of love (in the form of diapers, wipes, and other baby necessities.) THEN, as if that weren't already enough, these ladies pooled together and bought us a gift certificate for birth photography! Love!!! I just get a little misty-eyed thinking about the memories that will be captured... this baby's first moments, our reaction to this sweet little surprise, and most of all, the time when Isaac meets his little brother or sister for the very first time. This isn't something that I would've ever chosen to spend money on myself, so I'm extremely grateful that my L&D family would do something so thoughtful.

The greatest CRNA ever.

The greatest CRNA ever plus the two day shift preggos.

The cake was DELICIOUS by the way. Luckily, I went in for my 37wk appt & weigh in BEFORE the party! Haha!

I can't thank these ladies enough for the ways that they love on me, Jordan, Isaac, and Nims! I must get working on the dozens of thank you cards... pronto!!!

38 Week Update

We are officially on baby watch! I'm 2 weeks away from my due date and ready to go. I've knocked a lot of things off of my 35/35 list and am essentially only "waiting" until our family gets into town. And by "waiting," I mean keeping fingers and legs crossed as long as I can! Either way though, I can't wait to meet this baby!!!! I guess I can go ahead and make my own predictions, although I fully anticipate being just as wrong this time as I was with Isaac. I was certain that Isaac was a girl and that "she" was around the 8 pound mark.... and then 9lb 6oz Isaac comes out and shocks us all. This time around, I think I'm having another boy and that this baby won't be as big as brother Isaac.

We will find out soon!

I got this shot with my sweet high school small group girls after Sunday School. Check out that bump action!
Total Weight Gain: I've exceeded thirty pounds. Insert crying emoji.

Fetal Size: Full size baby. If this baby comes close to Isaac's size, it's already in the 8 & 1/2 pound range. But like I said earlier, I don't feel quite as "big" this time around as I did when I was pregnant with Isaac.

Movements: Lots and lots of movements all day long, much of which feels L-O-W. My fundal height had dropped at this weeks appointment, and I can totally understand why!

Symptoms: I've been battling a cold all week which has overshadowed any pregnancy-related complaint. Other than that, all the typical 38 week feelings are there: some occasional contractions, insomnia, fatigue, etc. Some days I'm starving and some days I can't fit more than a bite or two in my stomach. Some days I feel like I pee every 15 minutes. By the end of a 12 hour shift, I can no longer see my ankle bones for all the swelling. Nothing too exciting or terrible.

Gender: A surprise!!! We have names picked out for either sex: Ian Michael or Natalie Anne. Just like Isaac's middle name is a family name, both Michael & Anne are family names. Ian is the scottish variant of John, which means "God is gracious," so my husband gets to fulfill his desire for a meaningful, Biblical boy's name (just like Isaac). And then we just like the name Natalie. For no fancy reason other than we just plain like it. Ha!

Cravings: Nothing in particular, although cheese usually always sounds good.

Aversions: Ugh. Water. I try to keep up with the amount of water I should drink each day and it's getting SO old. Not only that, my heartburn/reflux seems to get worse with a stomach full of water. Oh well, bottoms up!

Next Up: If I don't deliver in the next few days, I have some last-minute appointments to take care of. Also, my doctor will check my cervix on Friday. Also, my GBS swab last week was negative! Hurray!

2014 in review

Happy 2015!!!!

We hope you have a blessed year! It is going to be a big year for my family, considering anytime now, we will be adding a new member to the Mims clan. I'd say that we have lots of other things on our plate, but honestly, all I can see right now is baby #2. And that's not because I can hardly see the keyboard around my pregnant belly. I've had fun looking over the past year's posts and pictures. It's hard to believe Isaac looked so little! I only blogged a measly 70 times, which breaks down to only 5.8 blogs/month.... it's been a busy year! It's nice to reminisce about the good times and see where the Lord has taken and grown our family this year.

Here's a quick recap of 2014:
January: Girl's Retreat 2014 was held at a fantastic waterfront home and we studied Gods at War. It kicked off a really wonderful small group of girls that I've met with regularly ever since.

February: Student Life Conference and Passion 2014 kept us away from home two weekends in a row. Also, Isaac and I went on a whirlwind trip to Austin to visit some dear friends.

March: While Jordan spent spring break traveling the southeast with our students, I spent spring break with Isaac. This was also the month I started the journey towards becoming a Fetal Monitoring Educator (which didn't become official until November! Sheesh!) and we took a family trip to Austin to spend the weekend with another set of dear friends. Lastly, this was when our stubborn little boy decided he wanted to walk (finally) and ever since hasn't stopped moving.

April: One of our two 2014 trips to Augusta was in April and I was able to celebrate the pregnancy of an especially dear friend.

May: We learned that our family would be expanding! Positive pregnancy test and a due date of 1/25/15! I also ran my one and only race this month.

June: I rolled over into a new decade! 30 years old as of 6/4. Hubs turned 31...Old man. We also took our first Isaac-free vacation, spending a long weekend in San Antonio.

July: Jordan and I celebrated our 8th year of marriage. This was another busy month where we spent almost as much time away from home as we spent at home. Isaac took his first trip to the zoo and we took our first lengthy road trip to visit friends in north Texas.

August: This was a pretty quiet month, which was well appreciated after a busy summer.

September: I took a rejuvenating mommy only trip to Nashville to visit my sister and her husband.

October: My sweet boy had his second birthday! It was perfectly low-key where we spent the whole day doing and eating exactly what Isaac loves. He also moved out to his big boy room and the nursery was stripped down and rearranged to prepare for baby #2.

November: Second trip to Augusta and my first baby shower for kiddo #2. Instead of flying this time around, we drove the trip and it was a huge success. We celebrated Thanksgiving with our Houston family.

December: We celebrated Christmas and continued prepping our home and family for baby #2.

It was a wonderful year! Here's hoping for another fantastic year!!

35/35

The day has arrived folks. I am a mere 35 days away from my January 25 due date. That's 28 days from my 39th week (which was when I had Isaac). The days are few.

And somehow, the details/to-dos are few as well.

I think it's just the second child nonchalance.

Just as my entire 2nd pregnancy has been less anxiety-filled than my first, I'm just not that worked up over getting a ton of things done in the next 4-5 weeks. I looked back over my 35/35 list from September 2012 which reminded me of some important things I haven't even thought of yet (oh yeah, what am I going to do with the dog? Ive thought about Isaac, but maybe not Mauve.). And then there were many things that I just don't have to repeat (Like I'm using the same pediatrician. Don't need to interview her! Ha!). But the furniture is put together, washing bottles can wait, I'm already registered at the hospital, and we're re-using 98% of Isaac's old gear, which since I've put it together/taken it apart 1,000 times since his arrival, I'm not sweating the fact that the carseat is still in it's box and the pack-n-play is tucked in the corner.

So, in no particular order, here's a list of things I'd like to have accomplished prior to baby #2's arrival:

  1. Get the carpets cleaned.
  2. Pack a minimal hospital bag.
  3. Have the house sprayed for bugs.
  4. Deep clean the house. #nestingprobs
  5. Buy some goodies for my doctor, CRNA, and delivery nurse.
  6. Pre-Baby Mani/Pedi.
  7. Fresh hair color & cut.
  8. Prenatal Massage and bikini wax.
  9. Wash baby's newborn clothes and linens.
  10. Check on the status of my breast pump (thank you insurance company!)
  11. Arrange care for Isaac and Mauve if I go into labor early.
  12. Buy a "brother gift" for Isaac.
  13. GBS swab... fingers crossed I'll be negative again.
Compared to last time, this list is pretty do-able. And lets face it, even though having a fresh mani/pedi seems to be really important, lots of these things are frivolous and completely unnecessary. All in all, I'm pretty ready to have a baby.

In 5 more weeks.

34 Week Update (a few days late)

I celebrated making it to 34 weeks a few days ago, which means this Sunday, I'll be 35 weeks pregnant (yay math.).  The scarier alternative to saying that I'm 35 weeks along is that I have 35 days left until my due date. Yikes! I posted a 35/35 blog when I was pregnant with Isaac and I'd like to sit down and make another similar list of things to accomplish. I've been nesting like crazy over the last week, so now's a great time to get a to-do list together.

Here's the real bummer: I don't have a current pic of the bump. Boo.

I DO however have a pic from our family picture session. It's a couple of weeks old by now, but who cares? I can't wait to share the rest... once our Christmas cards get to wherever they're going!

Total Weight Gain: 27lbs or so? My weight has really fluctuated up and down over the last month... one appointment I've gained, then the next I've lost. Then I'm up a little and then I'm down a bit. It's been harder to keep up with.

Fetal Size: Some places say a pineapple, although that seems really REALLY uncomfortable to imagine being inside my tummy. Realistically, this baby is probably in the 5 pound range and somewhere between 18-20 inches long.

Movements: Still plenty of movements, but baby is slowing down a little bit. Even though this kiddo isn't quite as active, some of these pokes and jabs are getting pretty strong! I can tell already that this baby has very long legs! Haha!

Symptoms: Contractions. Heartburn. Contractions. Round ligament stretching. Contractions. Multiple trips to the bathroom each night. Don't get me wrong... I feel pretty great! All in all, it's exactly what I would expect to feel like at 34+ weeks. The contractions are there but easily manageable and nothing too exciting. The heartburn is manageable as long as I remember to take my prilosec at the same time every day.

Gender: Surprise!!!! What do YOU think Baby #2 is?

Cravings: I wouldnt turn down chips & queso, but that's no different from my non-pregnant self.

Aversions: Nothing much.

Next Up: Weekly appointments start up, GBS swab, and maybe one last ultrasound for size and position? I may pass on that ultrasound however; we all know I have a proven pelvis and I'm certain this baby is head down.

Mostly, I'm just SO excited to meet this baby. I can't wait to see what kind of a personality he or she has. I want some sweet newborn snuggles. I look forward to watching Isaac become a big brother. Despite the impending chaos of having 2 babies instead of 1, life just feels rosy right now.

Baby Sprinkle

Here's a quick little recap post of the sweet little sprinkle that my sisters and best friend threw for baby Mims #2. Almost immediately after announcing our impending bundle of joy, Casey insisted on throwing us a shower to celebrate. I was both flattered and a little concerned... I don't really know how I feel about big showers for second+ babies. Also, we have so few needs, that I didn't really see the necessity in having another shower for this baby. I made all these feelings known to my sister, who quickly brushed them away and insisted on having some sort of celebration for the newest member of our family (isn't she great?). I agreed on the condition that the shower would be more of a sprinkle and easy for her to organize.... basically small, simple, and sweet.
Cutest little invite ever.
My Aunt Dottie (L) and my mom (R)
My dad's wife, Diane
The two Holly(ie)s
My sister Jennifer (L) and niece Mary Elizabeth (R)
Mom and Nana
In all the pictures my sister took, we got zero bump shots and zero shots of me with Casey! I'm so bummed about this (lack of sister shots, not lack of bump shots). She even looked particularly cute that day! Despite my unfortunate lack of picture, the sprinkle was absolutely perfect! We all dined on awesome Boll Weevil desserts and had some quality time to catch up with each other. Much to my surprise, baby M got a ton of great stuff as well!!! We left with a car full of baby goodies and hearts full of love.

Many many many thank yous to the three lovely ladies who made this sprinkle happen.

30 Week Update!

Goodness gracious, it's been an awfully long time since the old blog has been active. Many apologies for that, we've been a busy little bunch here! You can expect lots of posts and updates over the next week or so. I've got a lot to catch up on!

In the meantime, here's a quick pregnancy update. I completely missed the 28 week update, mostly because I worked that day and then never sat down long enough to write a post and snap a bump picture. Either way, nothing much has changed in the last 2 weeks, except now I'm 3/4 of the way to my due date! Check out the belly shot (here's a reference from just 10 weeks ago and then 6 weeks ago!):

Total Weight Gain: Somewhere between 22-24lbs now. Sheesh. So far, I am replicating the exact same weight gain pattern with Isaac: steady at first, then a giant leap at 28 weeks, followed by very small increases over the last 10 weeks.

Fetal size: between 15-16" long and approximately 3 pounds!

Movements: This baby still continues to amaze me with it's almost constant movements. There isn't a moment of the day where I'm worried about this kid's well being.

Symptoms: Heartburn. Definitely starting to have some contractions here and there, but nothing to get too excited about. A few days of fatigue thrown in the mix, although I blame that on an active toddler.

Gender: Still a mystery! I thought we might have settled on our girl and boy names, but now I'm kind of floundering a little bit.

Cravings: Nothing

Aversions: Also nothing. Boring!!

Next up: I have apparently passed my glucose test since I never got a call to schedule the big, mean 3-hour test. Also, the 28 week ultrasound of baby M looked perfect. All the cranial anatomy was completely normal and baby's growth was right on track. I start to see my OB every 2 weeks now and  only have my GBS swab to do between now and the end!

Currently...

Seems like everyone has posted a "Currently" blog in the last few weeks, so being the always-late-to-the-party-follower that I am, I thought it'd be a funny glimpse into my mind. Also, I have a few moments to blog with nothing in my brain worth sharing.

Maybe it's because my brain is feeling more and more empty as this pregnancy goes on. Placenta brain: It's a real diagnosis.

Here's what's happening in my corner at this moment in time:

Listening... to the hummmm of the air conditioner. And nothing else. Sweet, sweet nap time silence.

Eating... a handful of candy corn. Lunch consisted of a frozen pizza. I should make sure to take my prenatal vitamin today, since my nutritional intake so far today has been sugar and cardboard.

Drinking... A big glass of water!

Wearing... The t-shirt I slept in last night, a pair of Nike shorts, and a nursing bra. My overall plan for today was to clean the house and play with my kid, and neither of these tasks require makeup, hair, or appropriate attire. At least I'm wearing shorts and a bra. You're welcome!

Feeling... Irritable. (This hits close to home.) Not sure if it's hormone-related or if everyone around me has purposefully been dancing on my last feeble nerve. Plus, I'm battling another round of congestion and a toddler who has a newfound love of the word "no". All in all, it kind of feels like survival mode. Hence the pizza and day old clothes. #RealLife

Weather... is beautiful! Sunny, breezy, and not fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk hot. Here in South Texas, we call that a "cold front."

Wanting... a pedicure! It's getting harder and harder to reach my toes, which are woefully neglected right now. Plus, it's still warm enough to wear sandals and flip flops, despite the aforementioned cold front, meaning my toes are committing the ultimate girl crime.

Needing... another glass of water. All this stuffy-nose mouth-breathing has me parched. I guess I could also use some chapstick.

Thinking... I really need to get up and clean the bathroom already. Because it certainly won't clean itself and with lots of wedding festivities this weekend and 12 hour shifts on Monday & Tuesday, it's now or never next week.

Enjoying... all the little bumps and wiggles from baby #2. (He/She likes candy corn apparently) This child squirms around 24/7, and I love it. What do you think Baby Mims #2 is? Little sister or baby brother??

20 Week Update!

20 Weeks! Halfway to fully cooked! With Isaac's birthdays and the holidays taking place during the second half of this pregnancy, I'm going to say that things are only going to move faster and faster and faster. And then I'll have a baby. Yikes.

Check out this growing bump!!! (and my sad-looking rained-on, ponytail hair) If you need a reference, this is what it looked like just 3 short weeks ago. Talk about popping out!

Total weight gain: Twelve pounds. Bleh.

Fetal Size: A Banana! Or, to make it easier to picture, here are a couple of pictures of my little love!!!

Movement: Tons of movements all day long. It was especially fun to watch the baby kick and wiggle around during the ultrasound on Friday. Also, Jordan was able to feel some kicks last week!

Symptoms: Heartburn, which is now being managed with some over the counter antacids. Tums wasn't cutting it anymore and when I started to feel miserable after drinking water, I knew it was time to start something stronger.

Gender: A surprise!!! What do you think we are having????

Cravings: Nothing especially exciting

Aversions: Not much really

Next Up: Reaching Viability (24 weeks!), then later on, the glucose tolerance test and an additional ultrasound. On Friday during my anatomy scan, the sonographer was able to get great pictures of every organ except the brain (because of the baby's position). Just to be on the safe side, my doctor wants another scan to get those detailed pictures of the brain so we can be certain he or she is growing and developing appropriately. She told me not to worry (there's obviously a brain in that little noggin) and I think I'm doing a good job holding down the anxiety, but its still something that crosses my mind on a fairly routine basis. Otherwise, our stinker looks perfect and is growing right on track!

17 Weeks

Originally I'd planned to write an update around the 16 week mark and last week flew by so fast it made my head spin a little... or maybe it was just because I got up too quickly. Love the second trimester! Here I am at 17 weeks... or 23 weeks left! (that sounds much scarier.)
Total Weight Gain: 8lbs per the Doc's office scale... 6lbs by mine here at home. I'll let my brain believe that my home scale is closer to the truth. Really, it's probably just the difference between weighing first thing in the morning with no clothes on and an empty bladder versus midmorning after breakfast with scrubs on. All I know is that it must've been a man who decided that pregnant women should be subjected to weigh in at every prenatal visit. That alone makes my blood pressure go up.

Fetal Size: An iPhone with arms & legs! or the size of a turnip, which seems much more boring and harder to visualize. Yesterday during Sunday School, I totally held my phone up to the belly for the high school girls to admire how big my baby had gotten.

Movement: Yes! Little bumps and flutters. I felt this baby moving much much earlier on than with Isaac. Knowing what to look for made a huge difference,

Symptoms: Heartburn already! I'm pretty certain that started a little later with Isaac. Also, the girls are still tender, I'm still routinely constipated (thanks for that one, prenatal vitamin), and I occasionally still fight off feelings of fatigue, usually the morning after a tough day at work.

Gender: Don't know and likely won't find out! We enjoyed the surprise so much with Isaac that our plan is to be surprised all over again.

Cravings: I went through a dairy kick last week. Otherwise, I swing back & forth between salty and sweet cravings. Nothing too exciting yet.

Aversions: Nothing really.

Next up: 20 week ultrasound for anatomy and size. I seriously can NOT believe I've already got this appointment scheduled. That means I'm nearly halfway through, which is enough to get the cold sweat and hyperventilation going. This pregnancy is flying!

Pregnancy Update: 14 weeks!

Now that the entire world knows that we are expecting baby number 2, I can finally open up and share some details about this pregnancy. I've had such bad writer's block on here because I wasn't quite ready to share one of our BIGGEST happenings of this year. It was hard to think about anything else!
Sporting a bump already! (12 weeks)
Rewind back to May for a second... on the 17th, I ran in the Beach to Bay Relay Marathon (remember? The one where my shuttle bus ran into another car on the bridge?!). The following Monday, I was still feeling really wiped out, which was unusual for me. Not only had I trained well for this race, but it was relatively short. I just couldn't seem to shake off the fatigue. I had a sneaking suspicion that I might be pregnant, but stubbornly waited until Friday to take a pregnancy test. Sure enough that afternoon, while Isaac and Jordan were playing in the backyard, I saw two definitive pink lines!
Our little buddy/sweetheart!
A month later (9 weeks), we saw our little bean via ultrasound. He or she looked awesome, was wiggling all over the place, and had a strong heartbeat. My official due date was set for January 25, 2015!! I was feeling pretty miserable by then with daily fatigue and incessant nausea. I wouldn't say it was all that more or less dramatic than my pregnancy with Isaac, but this time around, I just wasn't able to slow down and rest with a toddler to care for and entertain! Thankfully, Isaac never turns down an episode of Curious George.

We told our families after the first appointment and slowly started leaking the big news to our closest friends. I had another appointment at 12 weeks, heard the heartbeat again and felt comfortable widening our circle even further. We found a Big Brother t-shirt for Isaac and surprised my coworkers and more close friends. Then finally, after we got both student camps out of the way, we announced our great joy to the whole world! I'm now 14 weeks and a few days along and feeling substantially better. I know everyone wants to know about the gender and we declined the first trimester chromosomal screening. This baby will probably be a big surprise just like big brother Isaac was!

We are truly blessed beyond measure to have this little life in our care. I am thrilled and thankful and full of love for this new baby. The Lord has been so good to our family!!!

The Mims are Expanding!

We are beyond thrilled to announce that Isaac will be a big brother this coming January 2015!!!!

Milk (no cookies) take 2

So when we left off, I'd told you that breastfeeding takes stamina, determination, frequent nursing sessions, and maybe a LOT of Lanolin.

Onward and forward we go. What about formula? What happens if supplementation is necessary? First off, formula is a totally acceptable form of nutrition and there are many circumstances where supplementing with formula is needed. Prematurity (this includes late-pretermers too), low blood sugar, excessive weight loss, significant jaundice, or maternal reasons (illness or complications from delivery) are all valid reasons for formula supplementation. It doesn't mean you're a failure. It also doesn't have to ruin your desire to breastfeed. Don't forget, you gotta be stubborn!

Resist the urge to supplement with formula in the few days between birth and when the breast milk comes in. Remember when I said it can take several days for mature milk to arrive? Healthy, full-term babies are born with a little extra chub-chub to burn off during those first few days. In fact, it's not uncommon for babies to lose up to 10% of their initial body weight. If your bundle of joy weighs 9 and a half pounds at birth like mine did, losing 10% can look like a LOT of weight. Just keep going back to the breast regularly, and watch your baby's output. The number of wet and dirty diapers is your clue as to whether or not he is getting enough.
Source
Prematurity can certainly lead to the longest period of supplementation, depending on how early your baby arrives. In this case, a good breast pump will be your greatest asset - because it may be your only means of stimulating a milk supply. This girl has written a great blog post with tons of great info about exclusively pumping. Keep in mind that most premature babies not only lack a strong suck reflex, but also don't have the energy required to nurse. For extended periods of separation, as in long NICU stays, you'll want to pump as often as your baby would nurse (10-12x per day). Maintain close contact with your NICU nurses and a lactation consultant to ensure the greatest chance for success in getting breast milk to your little peanut. Breast milk is FAR superior nutrition for premature babies, and although some supplementation will likely be necessary, any amount of breast milk will be ideal. Be diligent to pump, be protective of your milk supply, and be openly flexible in regards to feeding your baby expressed milk from a bottle.
Source
Low blood sugar, excessive weight loss, jaundice, and maternal reasons are typically short-lived instances of supplementation. We're talking as little as one bottle and as much as a week or so. When possible, always offer both breasts as a feeding prior to finishing a feeding with formula. This is ideal, as it still provides stimulation for milk production. In the absence of this option, pumping each feeding is needed to prevent a decrease in milk supply. If you're worried about "nipple confusion," ask your nursery nurse if it's possible to either gavage feed or use a supplemental nurser.

Maybe you're as stubborn as a mule and yet things just aren't working out like you'd hoped. There are certainly speed bumps that can pop up, which can make navigating around breastfeeding a lot more difficult. Low production, flat or inverted nipples, issues with latch, tongue tie, mastitis, engorgement, and nipple breakdown are some of the most common problems encountered while breastfeeding. My advice? Call a Lactation consultant. Certified lactation consultants can be a wealth of knowledge. Establishing contact with an LC prior to hospital discharge is a great foundation for future success.

Finally, with increased education comes increased chances of success. I can think of about a dozen more talking points regarding nursing, there is still so much to say! If you are serious about breastfeeding, look into taking a class. There are also tons of books, websites and blogs that are WAY more informative.

I know I've already said "finally," but I have one more thing to say about breastfeeding. There's this turning point that happens one day and suddenly things start getting easier. You see, despite it being exhausting, anxiety-inducing, and grit-my-teeth painful (lanolin, cold gel soothies, and nipple shells were my go-to comfort for nipple soreness), breastfeeding is also kinda magical. For the first 6 months of my son's life, my body provided every drop of nourishment his little body needed. I also protected him from disease (including one particularly nasty stomach bug that everyone in the house got except him). I've read to him, sang to him, prayed over him, studied his perfect little features and kissed his chubby cheeks. For a few minutes each day, he is once again a part of me.

And that makes it all worth it.

All the milk and none of the cookies

Moving forward with L&D 1102, we've got another loaded topic to discuss. The questions I received were "When does the milk come in?" and "What about formula supplementation? Will it screw up breastfeeding?" So I'll get to those questions and maybe a few others also, because at work, I often hear the same questions over and over again.

What this post isn't: a litany of awesome reasons to breastfeed (I mean, we already know this, right?)

What this post is: the ins & outs, and what/where/when/why/how's of breastfeeding. I left off the who, because surely that's an obvious answer.
Source.
And no good L&D post comes without a disclaimer. It's the one you've all grown familiar with: I'm not an expert. I'm not a lactation consultant - just speaking from experience. What I talk about here can't ever replace your doctor's advice.

So lets get started. You want to breastfeed, and you've just been handed a squishy newborn. What now? First things first, just dig your heels in, get stubborn, and prepare yourself to work hard. Breastfeeding your first baby isn't exactly rainbows and cupcakes. It takes a lot of energy when you're the most exhausted. It's easy to throw in the towel, but it takes some determination to see things out to completion. Anyone can do the bottle shake, but there's only one person who can nurse your child (even at 3am-- and then again at 4:15). That's you and it's an important job.

After you've decided that you're in this for the long haul, it's time to latch that baby on. There are lots of nursing positions: Cradle, Cross-Cradle, Side-Lying, Football (which is my personal favorite for the floppy newborn phase), so pick one, and grab a couple of pillows. Positioning is really important in those first few weeks. I can't tell you how many times I ended up with a sore neck or shoulders from hunching one way or the other just to make nursing as easy as possible for my little man. Pay attention to this: A newborn doesn't have the neck control or the strength to hold himself on the breast all by himself. One hand has to support your breast, while the other holds the baby to the breast. This won't go on forever, but in the early days, it's really key to good nursing sessions. Once you're all set up in a good position (tummy to tummy, nipple to nose!), it's time to get the nipple to the mouth. When he's all wide-mouthed and "baby birding" it, that's the perfect time to latch on. A word about latching on: It's more than just having a nipple in a mouth. We're talking Dyson Root Cyclone Technology pulling the entire nipple (including almost all of the areola as well) into his mouth. When it happens, you'll know. Honestly, I didn't get the full latch-on until my second or third nursing session, but from that point on, I knew exactly what I was going for when it was time to nurse.

As a warning, it can be painful. Let me reword that: It's probably going to be painful. Now there are definitely instances where pain is the result of poor latch or other issue. But, I also think it's a widely held misconception that nursing shouldn't be uncomfortable, because even with a great latch and intact nipples, the first minute or two of each nursing session would make my toes curl. Remember that stubborn-ness? This is where you dig your heels in, grit your teeth and get over yourself.

So, When does the milk come in? In short, it can take days for your milk to come in. This means that at first it will appear as if you aren't making anything at all. The #1 most asked question/most heard excuse is "but I'm not making any milk." When your baby is only hours old, there is very little milk being made (like, as in drops of milk), and not only is that first milk super concentrated and extra fortified, but also your 2 hour old newborn has a stomach the size of a marble. It doesn't take much to fill up that tiny tummy. You'll go through three stages on the way to mature milk: Colostrum is first and it's that super concentrated, extra fortified milk I just mentioned. It's thick and sticky and a golden yellow color. Transitional milk is what comes around between colostrum and mature milk. It's less thick, higher in volume and still a yellowy color. Lastly, mature milk comes in. It's the highest in volume, the most thin and almost a bluish white in color. Typically it takes 48-72 hours for your milk to come in, but it can be transitioning as early as 24 hours or as late as 5 days (for me, it was 4 days).

Aside from being stubborn as a mule, breastfeeding success comes with repetition. Demand leads to supply, so stimulation is needed for milk production. This means that in those early days, baby goes to the breast frequently. Your goal is a well-nourished baby and a stable milk supply, which unfortunately comes with little sleep and majorly sore nipples. Whether you're reading hunger cues or trying to maintain some semblance of a nursing schedule, you should shoot for 8-12 nursing sessions in a 24 hour period. For the first 4 weeks, I nursed at least every 3 hours while awake. He always went to the breast for feedings, and if my boy only nursed on one side, I'd pump the other. I also got into the habit of pumping after the first feeding of the day and prior to going to bed. As my milk supply leveled out, I dropped to either morning pumping session or evening pumping session. Nowadays, I only pump at work or if I've missed a feeding and am feeling engorged. Being really diligent in a nursing schedule means routine stimulation which in turn equals milk production.

I'd say this is a good stopping point for today. I originally had written a few more paragraphs, but things started to get overwhelming. As with the epidural question, this whole breastfeeding thing could take up about five separate posts. In the next post, we'll tackle formula & supplementation and how that can affect breastfeeding. Later, we'll look at tips, tricks, and must-haves for nursing success.
